We present to you the fruit of an entire lifetime. It is the achievement of the unswerving perseverance and resourceful ingenuity of the Bulgarian Nikola Kolev, who dedicated all his life to inventing a new generation of Diesel engines. The value of this invention is only commensurate with the value of the human life employed in service of that invention.


 

THE INVENTOR

 

Nikola Todorov Kolev dedicated his life, since his youth, to the internal combustion engines.

In January 1962 he graduated with an engineer’s diploma in internal combustion engines the Higher Machinery and Electrical Engineering Institute “Lenin” in Sofia.

Then Mr. Kolev was appointed as engineer of the “Diesel Power Plant – Varna” in Varna. After a year he received a second assignment as a department head in “Electricity Production Enterprise” with production capacities of 200 MW. He was its director until 1972.

From 1972 to 1976, Mr. Kolev was appointed in the Plant for Diesel Engines VAMO in Varna as director of the research organisation and technical director of the plant.

In 1973 he created an original high-momentum slow-speed engine with volume of 1.8 litres and power 40 hp at rotation frequency of crankshaft = 1000 rpm and torque Md = 300 Nm. After successful tests, he used this invention as the base for his doctoral thesis, which Dr. Kolev defended successfully on January 26, 1976.

From April 1976 until January 1991 Dr. Kolev was the director of a research organisation under the Academy of Sciences of Republic of Bulgaria, established by the Bulgarian government for designing and testing of new engine constructions based on Dr. Kolev’s inventions.


 

THE INVENTION: A Revolution for Diesel Engines

 

By September 1976, having worked intensively, the new research organisation put in action two original constructions of Diesel engines.

 

1. THE KN-2400TD DIESEL ENGINE

The KN-2400TD Diesel engine is a high-momentum, low-speed, no connecting-rod, straight-shaft engine with the following specifications:

The excellent wear-resistance and maintained effective performance during the trials were the reason why the government ordered a single low-speed module for a main ship engine with 2500 hp (1850 kW), rotation frequency 120 rpm, weight-to-power ratio 4 kg/KW and dimensions: length 1500 mm / height 1500 mm / width 2500 mm.

 

2. DIESEL ENGINE KN-2600EDH

The KN-600EDH diesel engine has a straight shaft and is modified version of KN-2400TD,  with higher frequency of rotation and with the following specifications:

The State Committee for Science granted this engine a certificate for supreme technical achievement and the engine was approved for production (Supplement 13)

In 1981 a state order was placed for designing and testing of bus diesel engine. To fulfil the order, the inventor applied an ingenious kinematic and construction arrangement. The arrangement effectiveness was verified on a diesel engine with volume of 3600 cm3, shaft rotation frequency of 3200 rpm and power output of 96 hp (71kW).

The rig tests performed at 1800 hours confirmed the effectiveness and reliability of the construction. Approbation was granted to start a project development for production of powerful diesel engine for buses.

 

3. THE KN-12500A DIESEL ENGINE FOR BUSES

The new construction arrangement achieved reduced dimensions, reduced weight-to-power ration and high efficiency (86%—92%). The fuel consumption was measured to be 150 g/hour. The KN-12500A Diesel Engine was affirmed for production and awarded a gold medal for top technical achievement (Supplement 2).

The construction arrangement on point 3 was further developed to realize its full effectiveness in more powerful applications.

4. DIESEL ENGINE 12KN14 FOR HEAVY VEHICLES, TRACTORS, SHIPS AND GENERATORS

6. MEDIUM-SPEED DIESEL ENGINE 12KN300

This engine has 12 cylinders ⌽250 mm, piston stroke S=500 mm and rotation frequency of 600 rpm.

The structure has been developed to the phase of conceptual assembly drawings, for designing details of the test specimens.

 

IMPRESSIVE INDICATORS of the excellence of the Kolev Motors engines are:

a) Reduced power losses due to friction and high mean-effective pressure of the cycle

b) Reduced dimensions and high concentration of volume

c) Reduced weight-to-power ratio per unit of volume

d) Reduced number of parts of comparable power mechanisms in the classic twelve-cylinder-engine and Kolev Motors with twelve cylinders:

– classic V-shaped engines have 44 mechanical parts

– Kolev Motors have only 29 mechanical parts

e) They reduce the cost of mechanical processing; a cylinder block for the 12-cylinder engine Kolev Motors has only four main bearings.

f) The crankshaft has only three crankpins and four main bearing journals. The shaft is with increased stiffness due to bases overlapping with crankpins over 50%.

g) Kolev Motors reduce the cost of production of metals, tools, energy and labor. The cost per unit of output decreases over 25%.
